The range of benefits offered by porcelain veneers is quite extensive. Judging by the popularity of porcelain veneers at our practice, many people already know how these advanced cosmetic dentistry options can effectively address chips, spaces between the teeth, misalignment, and many other common concerns. Porcelain veneers are also great ways to hide the appearance of dark stains and discoloration on the teeth. The question is: can porcelain veneers themselves become stained at some point down the road? Fortunately, the answer to that question is no. The durable material that forms the composition of porcelain veneers is completely resistant to discoloration; therefore, porcelain veneers cannot stain, and should maintain the same color they had when they were first placed throughout their lifetime.

That said, since porcelain veneers can’t stain, they can’t be whitened either. When a veneer is created and placed on the affected tooth, it is color-tinted to provide a good blend with surrounding teeth. Its color when placed is permanent. This is why it is often recommended to have a professional teeth whitening treatment before the porcelain veneer procedure. When teeth whitening is performed just before the veneer is placed, the surrounding teeth already look brighter and healthier. Once the veneer is color-matched to the teeth on each side, it can have a whiter, more refreshed appearance from the outset that will never become discolored.

Keep in mind that you can still have a teeth whitening procedure even if you’ve had your veneers for a long time and did not have a whitening treatment beforehand; however, it may be more challenging to get the shades of the veneer and the surrounding teeth to match up. In circumstances such as these, the best way to obtain a nice blend of the whiter teeth with the porcelain veneer may be to replace the veneer with a new, whiter version.

At the very minimum, Dr. Trey Vereen typically advises patients to have a comprehensive dental cleaning before a porcelain veneer procedure so the results can look healthy and refreshed for a long time to come. To learn more about what you can expect from porcelain veneers, please contact us today!
